The Ultimate Guide to Video Resolutions (720p, 1080p, 4K)

When you are recording or exporting a video, you are often faced with a choice of resolution: 720p, 1080p, or 4K. But what do these numbers actually mean, and which one should you choose?

What is Resolution?

Video resolution refers to the number of pixels that make up the image. The more pixels there are, the sharper and more detailed the image will be. Resolution is typically expressed as width x height (e.g., 1920 x 1080).

720p (HD)

Resolution: 1280 x 720 pixels.

720p was the standard for high-definition video for many years. It is still commonly used for live streams, older YouTube videos, and situations where file size or internet speed is a major concern. While it is acceptable, it can look a bit soft on modern large screens.

1080p (Full HD)

Resolution: 1920 x 1080 pixels.

1080p is the current gold standard for social media and YouTube. It offers a great balance between high image quality and reasonable file size. If you are uploading a video to Instagram, TikTok, or YouTube, 1080p is the safest and most recommended choice.

4K (Ultra HD)

Resolution: 3840 x 2160 pixels.

4K offers four times the resolution of 1080p. It is incredibly detailed and looks stunning on modern 4K TVs and monitors. However, 4K files are massive and require a lot of processing power to edit.

Should you shoot in 4K? Yes, if your phone or camera supports it. Even if you plan to upload in 1080p, shooting in 4K gives you the freedom to crop into the video during editing without losing quality. It is also highly recommended if you plan to use our Stabilization effect, as the software needs to zoom in slightly to smooth out the footage.
